Holy Rosary (LaMotte, Iowa)
Description
An account of the resource
"In 1892 Bishop John Hennessy appointed Father Peter D. O’Malley to form a parish at LaMotte, about four miles from his country parish at Saint Theresa’s. Many area Catholics had poor roads and long distances for attending Bellevue, Otter Creek, Saint Donatus, or Saint Theresa’s. The Bishop foresaw a growing parish and a future parish school. LaMotte is in northern Jackson County and a few miles east of the Dubuque-to-Davenport highway. Land for church, school, rectory, and playground was purchased that year. The church was completed in time for the dedication on June 4, 1893."

-Rev. Edgar Kurt, The Witness, Profile #148, 5 November 1989

A name given to the resource
Holy Trinity (Baldwin, Iowa)
Description
An account of the resource
"In the southwest corner of Jackson County, between Maquoketa and Wyoming, the town of Fremont was platted in the center of Monmouth Township in 1859. Five years later, on May 5, 1864, Joseph J. Kopsa called a meeting of the area Catholics. He gave the land to the newly formed society that later became Saint John Bohemian Church. The name recognized that most of the members were of Czech ancestry. These settlers had been attending the Catholic Church in Onslow and then in their own homes when priests would visit the area from Cascade, Delmar, Garryowen, Hughes’ Settlement, and Oxford Junction. It is claimed that at least forty-five children were baptized in the old Ales homestead. They began building a stone church in 1864, and it was used for Mass before it was completed in 1871."

- Rev. Msgr. Title
A name given to the resource
Holy Trinity (Dubuque, Iowa)
Description
An account of the resource
"The German families in Dubuque asked Bishop Loras for permission to form a parish and built a small stone church at 8th and White Streets in 1851. Although named Holy Trinity, it was replaced in 1867 by the present Saint Mary Church at 15th and White Streets. Holy Trinity Parish came into being in 1909 when Father Arnold A. Boeding, the Sacred Heart pastor, asked Archbishop John J. Keane to create a new parish in the Eagle Point area of the city. Father Joseph A. Dupont, the Sacred Heart assistant, was appointed pastor. The parish was named Holy Trinity. Finding about 110 families in his care, Father Dupont chose the present location on Rhomberg Avenue. A committee headed by George Roepsch and Joseph Schlueter gave him valuable support and assisted in raising funds. When Father Dupont made the fund appeal, several parishes, many priests and businessmen, and a good number of parishioners responded, providing $30,000 in cash and $15,000 in pledges. Work began in early 1910. For the cornerstone laying, a long procession of 17 Catholic societies in colorful regalia proceeded from the Cathedral to the Rhomberg Avenue site."

- Rev.
“When John Plettchette died in 1859, he left six acres on condition that a church be built within two years. When Bishop Clement Smyth did not send a priest on the grounds that there was no church, John Heles and Joseph Friedman assumed leadership and a church was built in 1861 with Adolph Langel in charge of carpentry and John Maiers of masonry. Without a priest, the people gathered in the undedicated church on Sundays to be led in the Mass prayers and rosary by Anton Pfeffer, the schoolmaster. The parish school really existed before the bishop formally established the parish.”

Holy Trinity (Walford, Iowa)
Description
An account of the resource
"Father John Zlebcik formed the Catholics of the Walford area into Holy Trinity Parish and directed them in building their first church. Hand hewn oak beams supported the floor, and the pews were homemade. The church bell was donated by Francis and Rosa Roushar in 1891 and named Saint Francis. It now hands in the tower near the present church. About 1900, Father Peter Kloss succeeded Father Zlebcik at Norway and also cared for Holy Trinity. A majority of the parish agreed with Father Kloss the parish would be better served by rebuilding the church in Walford. Lumber salvaged from the dismantled church in the country was used. But some of the parish members refused to attend the new location after the church was completed."

- Kurt, Rev. Msgr. Edgar, Parish Profile #158, The Witness, January 21, 1990.

Immaculate Conception (Allison, Iowa)
Description
An account of the resource
"Father Bernard W. Coyle of Waverly is reputed to have celebrated the first Mass in the Allison community in the 1880s. He continued to care for the Catholics there on his many journeys. The further accounts of the parish’s beginning are confusing. One account claims the church was built in 1800 and dedicated on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, 1890, while Father Coyle was still serving the community. Another account gives the date as 1895 and Father James Ryan directing the building during his pastorate. The date of the transfer of title to Archbishop John Hennessy on December 10, 1890, would tend to favor the earlier date."

- Rev. Msgr. Title
A name given to the resource
Immaculate Conception (Blessing, Iowa)
Description
An account of the resource
"Father Scallan directed the building of a church, probably in 1880. Patrick and Bridget Farrell deeded four acres of their farm to the Diocese of Dubuque on May 25, 1880, a year after they had purchased it. The Centennial History of the Archdiocese states that Father Kelly celebrated Mass in Anthony and Martin Cummings’ homes, but no further reference to Father Kelly can be found in the Archives. Before it was called the Blessing Church, it was known as the Hudson or Lincoln Church, according to old directories. Blessing appears to have been named for James Blessington Dunn, a storekeeper and postmaster. The church was dedicated from its beginning to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary."

- Rev. Msgr. Edgar Kurt, "Parish Profile #119," The Witness, April 9, 1989.

Title
A name given to the resource
Immaculate Conception (Castle Grove, Iowa)
Description
An account of the resource
"The first European settlers in the Castle Grove area of Jones County were of Irish origin, arriving about 1846. They were visited regularly by Father Jeremiah Trecy from Garryowen on his missionary circuit. Then they were visited by Father Patrick McGuinnes. In 1853 he directed the building of the first church, dedicated to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. Years later the parish was named for the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the incitement of the Know Nothing animosity toward Catholics and immigrants, the small church was burned to the ground soon after its completion. “Upon the ashes and ruins of it the holy sacrifice was offered the day following, and the new stone church is now nearly completed,” the Catholic Almanac for 1856 reported. No real town grew up around the church, but Castle Grove is listed as a post office from the ‘60’s through the ‘80’s. Under the direction of Father Matthew Murphy, the school was moved to a new location and opened as a parochial school with the Clinton Franciscan Sisters in charge. Father Murphy served a long pastorate of thirty-one years. Later Father John J. Hennessy, nephew of Archbishop Hennessy, served a still longer time, from 1922 to 1966."

- Rev. Msgr. Edgar Kurt, "Parish Profile #21," The Witness, n.d.

Description
An account of the resource
““In 1853-54 I offered Mass in Cedar Rapids,” wrote Father Mathias Hannon of Iowa City. “I was the first priest to say Mass there.” The Mass Father Hannon celebrated in the Dubuque House, a small hotel, was the beginning of Immaculate Conception Parish. Father Mathias Michels often made the same journey from Iowa City to Cedar Rapids during the next three years. Then in 1858 Father William Emmonds found the Catholic population sufficient to organize a parish. That year they built a small church at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 7th Street, where the telephone building now stands.”

-Kurt, Rev. Msgr. Edgar, “Parish Profile #27,” The Witness, June 7, 1987.

Description
An account of the resource
"A basement for the future church was completed in 1870 and was used for Mass and other services until 1885, when the Gothic style brick church was completed on that early foundation. This building was damaged twice by fires. In 1968 a tornado almost destroyed the church. Construction of a new church began in July 1971. It was dedicated by Archbishop James J. Byrne on December 7, 1972, the eve of the patronal feast of the Immaculate Conception."

-Kurt, Rev. Msgr. Edgar, “Parish Profile #40,” The Witness, September 13, 1987.
