Santa Claus
Description
An account of the resource
This postcard is oriented horizontally and has a thin white border around all sides. The majority of the background is a light gray with white flecks, imitating snowflakes. In the upper left corner the word "Merry" is seen in gold script with what looks like a white dusting of snow atop the letters. In the bottom left corner the word "Christmas" is seen in similar gold script covered in white snow. Between these words is a framed scene. A blue frame shows a living room scene with four people sitting around a table in the center of the frame. Atop the table sits a lamp with a green shade and darker green/teal base. The four people are spread around the table doing activities like reading, knitting, and thinking. The carpet is a bright floral mixture and the walls are red and yellow with a fire raging. On the left side, a tan couch sits against the wall, a framed picture hangs from the wall, and a potted plant stands next to the couch. On the right side of the card stands Santa Claus. he leans over the right side of the frame. He wears a red cap and has long, blowing white hair and a beard. He smiles with red lips and white teeth and looks toward the left side of the postcard. His right arm is resting on the corner of the blue frame and holds the top of a large green bag full of toys. He wears a red coat with rolled cuffs and in his left hand he holds a large silver key. He wears black boots and brown pants and brown mittens. Sticking out of the green bag, a small American flag is seen.

This postcard is oriented vertically and has a white background. On all sides is a white border. In the upper border it reads in all caps black lettering "NATIONAL SANTA CLAUS SERIES." Under this, taking up most of the postcard, is a green holly leaves and red holly berries frame. On each side of the frame in the center are criss-crossing green ribbons making an "X." Inside of this frame is the upper left portion of an American flag, showing the blue square with white stars and alternating red and white stripes around it. In front of the flag stands Santa Claus smoking a cigar. He stands on the left side of the frame and looks out with smiling eyes. On his head he wears a white top hat with a blue band with white stars on it, reflecting the flag behind him. He has thick, long white hair and a thick, long white beard with rosy cheeks and white eyebrows. Across his middle is a white scarf with pale pink tassels and he walks into it to keep it against his body. Out of each of the coat pockets, a brown bottle of some form of liquor protrudes and loose bills and coins fall out of his pockets toward the ground. His left leg is extended out in front of him as he marches forward. Underneath this figure it reads, "Some Santa Claus, Ol' Right!" where the first letter of each new word is in red and the remaining letters in the words are black. This figure of Santa Claus can be opened to reveal a wreath of holly leaves and berries with ribbon and small birds around it on the piece of card stock in the center of the postcard. Under this wreath it reads, "Home folks are the dearest." The portion of the card where Santa's face is seen reads, "Amidst the joys of Christmas-tide, Its sweet, unnumbered treasures, May you be safely bound up in and enjoy endless chain of pleasure" with a place for someone to personalize the card by filling in the "To" and "From" portions of it.

Description
An account of the resource
This postcard has gold trim around all of its sides with holly leaves and berries in the corners and middles of the sides. Inside the gold trim is a pale blue background with a darker blue netting pattern. Three elves wearing green clothing, pointed hats, and pointed shoes are seen on the postcard. The elf on the top left is mostly covered by a gold 3D embellishment of Father Christmas driving a sleigh pulled by a reindeer and holding a small tree and assorted toys. This embellishment also covers some of a painting on the postcard which shows a shepherd and his sheep in a pasture at sunset or sunrise. In the center left of the postcard, it reads "With Hearty Christmas Greetings." To the right and below this are two other elves which have upset expressions on their faces. The elf on the right looks like it is trying to run from the writing, while the elf on the bottom left has fallen on its stomach and looks back at the inscription with an upset face.

Description
An account of the resource
This is a digital collection of the photographic works of Peter B. Hoffman, Jr. A Dubuque native, he was born on October 28, 1889 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery after he died on December 14, 1953. His parents were Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shorty thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and where considered "pioneer" residents of the city. The couple had seven children: Edward M., Albert D., Alvina M., Frank Charle, Vincent, Bertha K., and Peter B. Jr. The family was Catholic. Peter B. Jr. married Barbara R. Bungert sometime between 1915 and 1925, and they had one daughter, Rosalyn Marie. Peter worked in his father's store as a grocer clerk and continued in the grocery business throughout his life; he was also drafted in WWI and WWII. Although he is never named as the person taking the photos, the pictures contain multiple images of Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr., leading to the conclusion that his son was the photographer. (Note: The name "Hoffmann" appears with both one and two "n"s throughout the family and newspaper accounts.)

Description
An account of the resource
Emil Youngblood and Edward Hoffman sit atop a bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River. Two train tracks run along the bank of the river and wind around another bluff in the background. Telegraph lines run along the train tracks. Emil is sitting with his hands around his left knee, and looking straight out. Edward is sitting next to him with his legs crossed and looking down towards the train tracks. A tree grows out of a bluff behind the men.

The Herman J. Loemker Collection
Description
Rev. Herman J. Loemker, a German-born pastor, served in eighteen German Methodist Episcopal churches in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and South Dakota from the 1880’s until his death in 1937. While he utilized lantern slides for temperance lectures, he also produced lantern slides illustrating the communities where he lived. He served as pastor of the German ME church in Dubuque from 1915 to 1917. Nearly 270 of his glass lantern slides depicting Dubuque and a few of the surrounding communities are now in the collections of the Loras College Center for Dubuque History. These include Sunday school parades, churches, schools, buildings, steamboats, rural scenes, road construction, and some unique images of train wrecks, Union Park, and the horse racing track at Nutwood Park. The images offer a snapshot of life in Dubuque from the pre-World War I era to the early 1930’s.
