    <dcterms:description><![CDATA["Father John M. Wolfe was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Maquoketa, February 1913, in his eighth year of the priesthood. He set about the spiritual and material development of this county seat parish. He soon gave attention to the Catholics in the area of the former county seat town of Andrew. In 1914 he began celebrating Mass in Hansen Hall, the second floor of the original Jackson County Court House. That fall and the next year he led the Catholics of the Andrew area in building Saint John church. It was dedicated on October 1, 1915."<br /><br /> - Msgr.     <dcterms:title><![CDATA[St. John (Blairstown, Iowa)]]></dcterms:title>
    <dcterms:description><![CDATA["Saint John Parish in the Benton County town of Blairstown came into being in 1945 as a mission of Saint Patrick Parish in Watkins, only five and a half miles away. Father Nicholas U. Keffeler, pastor of Watkins, recognized the prospects for a parish in Blairstown as he saw the town outgrow most of its neighbors. The first annual report for 1945 listed 90 members in 24 households. Father Jospeh A. Sullivan came as assistant in 1945, and Father Nestor B. Goedken came the following year. Until a church could be built, Sunday Mass was celebrated in the American Legion Hall in Blairstown."<br /><br />-Kurt, Rev. Msgr.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA["Under Father Murphy’s guidance 21 families collected $1,285 in 1877 for a parish church. They put up a small frame building about a mile west of the present town, on two acres donated by Ben Welp. On December 8, 1879, Father Murphy celebrated the first mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. About the same time J. B. Determan, Killian Kunkel, and Henry Lemker started a one-room parochial school for 25 children. Miss Mary Foley was the first teacher. Miss Mary Tasshaller and Miss Gertrude Eich were later teachers, using the same course of studies in secular subjects as the public schools.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA["Father Hanley supervised the building of the first church. On January 3, 1883, the church was dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist by Father Toohill. Father John Egan came to Belmond in 1887 and also cared for Clarion until 1900. When a tornado destroyed the church on June 20, 1894, Mass was celebrated in a public hall.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[&quot;Father John M. Molloy was appointed pastor of the Belmont and Ryan parishes in January 1909. Later that year he moved the Belmont rectory to the town of Ryan. Since the Belmont church was a truly rural church, it was easy for Father Molloy to close the parish. Then Belmont parishioners gravitated to either Ryan or Coggon. Meanwhile Father Molloy formed the Coggon area Catholics into a parish of their own and guided them in the building of a parish church. Archbishop James J. Keane formally established the parish in 1912. Dedication of the church to Saint John may have been in deference to Father John Molloy.&quot;<br />

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[&quot;Saint John Parish at Delhi in Delaware County received its first resident pastor in 1872, but the next pastor moved the residence to Manchester in 1875. Delhi was a mission of Manchester for seventy years, when a resident pastor was appointed in 1918. Seventy years after the Delhi pastor has moved to Manchester, the parish again received a resident pastor, Father Vincent T. Hovermann. Under his direction property was purchased east of the church and a rectory completed in March 1948.&quot;<br />

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[<p>“Father William Emmonds, the pastor of Saint Mary’s in Iowa City, first offered Mass in Mount Vernon and Lisbon area of Linn County in 1857. With the completion of the railroad to Cedar Rapids in 1859 came an influx of Irish immigrants. A year later the first church was built on property in Lisbon and Saint John the Baptist Parish had its beginnings. In 1870 Father William Daley, formerly a columnist on a New York newspaper, was appointed pastor of Lisbon, Mount Vernon, Mechanicsville, Clarence and Tipton and soon made his residence at Mechanicsville.”</p>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA["The Church of Saint John is eight miles northeast of Cascade and four miles south of Epworth. The two-acre church plot was given by a Protestant neighbor named Hooper. Father John Hawe directed the building of the first church in 1874 and cared for the parish until 1876, when Father Michael Meagher was appointed.
