                <text>““In 1853-54 I offered Mass in Cedar Rapids,” wrote Father Mathias Hannon of Iowa City. “I was the first priest to say Mass there.” The Mass Father Hannon celebrated in the Dubuque House, a small hotel, was the beginning of Immaculate Conception Parish. Father Mathias Michels often made the same journey from Iowa City to Cedar Rapids during the next three years. Then in 1858 Father William Emmonds found the Catholic population sufficient to organize a parish.                 <text>"From 1900 to 1903 Father Vincent Opava resided in a house near Saint Wenceslaus Church in Carroll Township, about a mile and a half west of Clutier. He cared for both Holy Trinity in Otter Creek and Saint Wenceslaus. In 1905, during the four-year pastorate of Father Aloysius Kolar (1903-1907), a rectory was built in Clutier. The next pastor, Father Joseph Gregor, served from 1907 to 1912. During his pastorate the Methodist church in Clutier was purchased and converted to Catholic use. When Father Gregor began celebrating Mass in Clutier every Sunday, Mass was said on alternate Sundays at Saint Wenceslaus and Holy Trinity. This continued until 1919, when Holy Trinity church was given into the care of the pastor of Saint Mary Church in Vining." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-Rev. Msgr.                 <text>"Early pioneers of Elma in Howard County had been attracted by employment in the Great Western railroad roundhouse. They attended Saint Patrick Church at St. Cecilia’s, west of Elma, where Father Francis Gunn was pastor. In 1892 the foundation for a church was laid on Elma property donated by Lemuel Potter. Later purchases gave the parish a total of six acres. Construction was not continual, but the church was finally ready for dedication to the Immaculate Conception in the summer of 1902. With 600 seat structure was of brick with white stone trim and slate roof. The interior was frescoed by George Satory, a prominent church decorator of that era."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&#13;

Several young men, pleased with the banks of the Red Cedar River in Black Hawk County south of Waterloo, laid out the town site in 1854. The Catholic settlers built a small church, put together from the cast-off slabs of a local sawmill.                 <text>"Under Father Murphy’s guidance 21 families collected $1,285 in 1877 for a parish church. They put up a small frame building about a mile west of the present town, on two acres donated by Ben Welp. On December 8, 1879, Father Murphy celebrated the first mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. About the same time J. B. Determan, Killian Kunkel, and Henry Lemker started a one-room parochial school for 25 children. Miss Mary Foley was the first teacher. Miss Mary Tasshaller and Miss Gertrude Eich were later teachers, using the same course of studies in secular subjects as the public schools.                 <text>&lt;p&gt;“Immaculate Conception Parish came into existence early in the history of the archdiocese because the town of Lansing in northeast Iowa was an important trading and shipping center on the great waterway of the Mississippi. The Catholics in that area depended upon the occasional visits of Father Michael Kinsella and other missionary priests. Then under direction of Trappist Father Francis Walsh, pastor of Wexford, the first church was built in 1855. They continued to be cared for from Wexford and Waukon, until Father Louis Corneiis came in 1867 as resident pastor.”&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

Mass in home or school continued until they built a church holding eight pews. Two ladies of the parish deserve the credit for getting the church built. Mrs. Mary Ryan, who was in her eighties, and Mrs. McElmeel went house to house soliciting funds. The date of building the frame church is not recorded. The first baptism of record was administered on March 25, 1883, by Father J. F. Richardson, an assistant at Saint Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque.”&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

Nagle was pastor of Holy Cross, 24 families pledged support for a small frame church, which was built of lumber from the surrounding hills. When it was dedicated in October 1905, it was placed under the protection of the Immaculate Conception.”&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
