Farrelly was appointed to Saint Rose Parish in 1876 or 1877, he became their first resident pastor in 1877. Father Byrne directed the building of a two-story frame school in 1882, a long building with only one room on each floor. The Sisters of the Presentation from Dubuque staffed the school, two Sisters teaching in each room. They were Sister Mary Vincent Donnelly, Sister Mary Baptista Hussey, Sister Mary de Sales Weibel, and Sister Mary Cecilia Malloy. In 1840 the federal government built Fort Atkinson and moved the Winnebagoes there from the Yellow River area north of McGregor for the Indians’ protection. When Bishop Loras learned that there were Catholics among the troops and Father Mazzuchelli’s converts among the Indians, he sent Father Remigius Petiot as a resident missionary chaplain, making it the second place in the new diocese with a resident priest. It would have been too far to send a priest every week or two from the cathedral rectory in Dubuque, where all the priests and seminarians were living. Father Petiot was warmly welcomed by the Winnebagoes and the Catholics attached to the Indian agency, but not by the official Indian agent. Description An account of the resource This is a digital collection of the photographic works of Peter B. Hoffman, Jr. A Dubuque native, he was born on October 28, 1889 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery after he died on December 14, 1953. His parents were Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shortly thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and were considered "pioneer" residents of the city. The couple had seven children: Edward M., Albert D., Alvina M., Frank Charle, Vincent, Bertha K., and Peter B. Jr. The family was Catholic. Peter B. Jr. married Barbara R. Bungert sometime between 1915 and 1925, and they had one daughter, Rosalyn Marie. Peter worked in his father's store as a grocer clerk and continued in the grocery business throughout his life; he was also drafted in WWI and WWII. Although he is never named as the person taking the photos, the pictures contain multiple images of Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr., leading to the conclusion that his son was the photographer. (Note: The name "Hoffmann" appears with both one and two "n"s throughout the family and newspaper accounts.) Paul is sitting amongst weeds, grass, and other greenery. He is wearing a long-sleeved shirt with a polka-dot tie or scarf that is wrapped around and underneath the collar of his shirt. He is also wearing shorts, tall socks that reach the midpoint of his shins and dark shoes that have straps on top of his foot. He appears to be sitting on a ledge or rock with his feet resting farther down on an apparent rock or ledge. Paul is lighter colored eyes and is smiling with his tongue visible. His hands are resting on his lap and in between his legs. His right hand is slightly blurry from motion. Paul was born June 27, 1918 and died April 28, 2019.
