Father John McMahon became the first resident pastor of St. Anthony and celebrated the first Mass in the new church on Christmas morning of 1893. Of the 85 subscribers on the March 5, 1885, list about forty were not Catholic. In 1887 Father Peter O’Dowd, the Independence pastor, came to Walker at the request of several Catholic families to discuss further the possibility of building a Catholic church in Walker. Nagle was pastor of Saint Boniface Parish in Garner from 1893 to 1903 and a missionary to a large area, he visited the Catholics of Woden in Hancock County about every month. Mass was usually celebrated in the home of John Quinn, southeast of Woden. During the last years of Father Nagle’s care they built a small frame church. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and were considered "pioneer" residents of the city. Bungert sometime between 1915 and 1925, and they had one daughter, Rosalyn Marie. Peter worked in his father's store as a grocer clerk and continued in the grocery business throughout his life; he was also drafted in WWI and WWII. Although he is never named as the person taking the photos, the pictures contain multiple images of Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr., leading to the conclusion that his son was the photographer. Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource Reilly, Sydney Description An account of the resource Sacred Heart Church, Holy Spirit Parish, located on the corner of 22nd Street and Windsor Avenue in Dubuque. This is a brick church on the right of the photo. There are two steeples with crosses at the top: the left steeple is shorter than the right. In the middle of the two steeples in a triangle roofed arch with another cross at the point of the roof. The right steeple has a clock in the tower. Both steeples have a zigzag pattern at the base of the spire. The church is facing 22nd street and from the street, there is a sidewalk and a metal fence around the property of the church. To the left of the church is an open flat field with a leafless tree close to the sidewalk. The gates have openings in front of the church and a walkway from the sidewalk up to the three sets of staircases which lead to the three doors to enter the church. Each of the doors is open and each has an arched entryway above the doors. Two doors are below each of the two steeples, and the middle door is under the triangle arched roof. Fischer at the annual Priests Retreat about founding a new parish in Waterloo. In January 1945 his Coadjutor, Archbishop Henry P. Title A name given to the resource Saint John the Baptist (West Ridge, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "Natives of Ireland were the first Catholic settlers in the West Ridge area of Winneshiek County, about eight miles northwest of Waukon. Norwegian settlers were their neighbors to the south. In 1860 Bishop Clement Smyth bought a lot for a cemetery and another lot for the church. Work on the church began in a year or two, with rock quarried on the William Rea farm nearby. The stone work was done by a man of the parish named Sweeney, while other parishioners quarried and transported the rock. Delay wrote in a parish history, on November 11, 1878, Father P.
