Eckhart came from the Gilbert parish north of Ames to celebrate the first Masses in Ames. The Catholic pioneers used the William Kingkade home and a grove on the John Meyers farm, and later Read’s Hall in downtown Ames. Archbishop John J. Hennessy directed Father Eckart to organize a parish and build a church. They purchased four lots on Lincoln Way in August 1899 and built a frame church. Title A name given to the resource St. Columbkille (Dubuque, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "When Saint Columbkille Parish was officially erected on May 24, 1997, the newly appointed pastor Father John R. Fogarty did not have to look for parishioners and buildings. The residents of West Hill welcomed Bishop John J. Hennessy’s decree providing them with their own parish and pastor. After years of going to the Cathedral, they had been celebrating Mass for some years with the Cathedral priests in the Presentation Sisters’ school. Father Thomas O’Reilly celebrated the first Mass in the temporary school on Bryant Street on September 21, 1879. After the school moved to the Rush Street location, the first Mass there was on the following December 14. The Sisters arranged to have Mass said regularly in the makeshift church inside the combination school and convent. (1810-1876), “O Blessed St. Donatus.” Description An account of the resource “Saint Donatus Parish is the only parish in the United States named for this heavenly protector against storms. Soon after the Iowa Territory was opened to settlement in 1833, pioneers from Luxembourg in Europe took up residence on the fertile hills and valleys about ten miles south of Dubuque in the area of the stream named Tetes des Morts (Heads of Death) as a result of a war between Indians in the area. About 1851 a pastor changed the name of the gruesome title to a saint quite popular in the Luxembourger’s homeland. They would like to have named the parish and church for their country’s patron, Our Lady, Consoler of the Afflicted, but Bishop Loras is supposed to have pointed out that there were already several churches named for the Blessed Mother.” - Rev. Description An account of the resource “The events of the new parish’s first year (1989) were: In April ten acres in Hiawatha were designated as the site. On July 11 Father Gossman was appointed the founding pastor. On August 19 the community was formed when they gathered for Mass in Hiawatha Elementary School cafeteria. Also in August the parish purchased a rectory at 1045 Eisenhower Road. In September Father Gossman began celebrating weekday Mass in the rectory. During the next several months the parishioners met in small neighborhood groups to bring to the surface a cross section of ideas as to what the parish should be. Title A name given to the resource St. Francis (Barclay, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "Saint Francis Church is located in Barclay Township, Blackhawk County, near Waterloo. It began in 1862 with the decision to build a church on the Joseph Rittelmeier farm two and a half miles southeast of Dunkerton. Limestone for the building was taken from the Brown farm quarry on the west bank of the Wapsipinicon River. It was completed just before Bishop Clement Smyth founded the parish in December 1862 with the appointment of Father John Gosker as the first pastor of Independence with the added care of the mission at Barclay." - Kurt, Rev.
