Wolfe was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Maquoketa, February 1913, in his eighth year of the priesthood. He set about the spiritual and material development of this county seat parish. He soon gave attention to the Catholics in the area of the former county seat town of Andrew. In 1914 he began celebrating Mass in Hansen Hall, the second floor of the original Jackson County Court House. Father Nicholas U. Keffeler, pastor of Watkins, recognized the prospects for a parish in Blairstown as he saw the town outgrow most of its neighbors. The first annual report for 1945 listed 90 members in 24 households. Father Jospeh A. Sullivan came as assistant in 1945, and Father Nestor B. Goedken came the following year. They put up a small frame building about a mile west of the present town, on two acres donated by Ben Welp. On December 8, 1879, Father Murphy celebrated the first mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. About the same time J. B. Determan, Killian Kunkel, and Henry Lemker started a one-room parochial school for 25 children. Miss Mary Foley was the first teacher. February 28, 1998. Description An account of the resource "Father John M. Molloy was appointed pastor of the Belmont and Ryan parishes in January 1909. Later that year he moved the Belmont rectory to the town of Ryan. Since the Belmont church was a truly rural church, it was easy for Father Molloy to close the parish. Then Belmont parishioners gravitated to either Ryan or Coggon. Meanwhile Father Molloy formed the Coggon area Catholics into a parish of their own and guided them in the building of a parish church. Title A name given to the resource St. John (Mount Vernon, Iowa) Description An account of the resource “Father William Emmonds, the pastor of Saint Mary’s in Iowa City, first offered Mass in Mount Vernon and Lisbon area of Linn County in 1857. With the completion of the railroad to Cedar Rapids in 1859 came an influx of Irish immigrants. A year later the first church was built on property in Lisbon and Saint John the Baptist Parish had its beginnings. The two-acre church plot was given by a Protestant neighbor named Hooper.
