Irish pioneers were the first to settle in the Dorchester area. In 1854 the Theodore Scwhartzhoff family were the first Germans to settle in the area. He was a frequent prayer leader on priestless Sundays. Title A name given to the resource St. Mary (Dubuque, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "Saint Mary Parish came into being in response to the petition of German families to Bishop Loras in 1819 for permission to establish a parish to provide for the German speaking Catholics of Dubuque. The first church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was built of stone in 1851 on the corner of 8th and White Streets in Dubuque. Because of rapid growth, plans for a new building were made in 1863, and the structure became a reality in 1867 at the corner of 15th and White Streets. It was named Saint Mary’s under the title of her Assumption. In late afternoon of January 9, 1976, the interior of the church was extensively damaged by fire and smoke. Msgr. The first German families arrived in 1845. Guttenberg became a flourishing river town because of lead mining in the area, the sawmills, stone quarries, and steamboat traffic on the Mississippi. Description An account of the resource "Saint Mary’s of Hanover and Saint Mary’s of Dorchester in Allamakee County have been joined by only eight miles of road, and they had a common pastor until 1915. In the beginning the pastor of Lansing, Father William Jacoby, celebrated Mass in a little school house two miles north of the present Hanover church in 1875. Father Edmond Heelen came from Dorchester to direct the building of a little frame church beside the school house and to celebrate Mass there occasionally until he left Dorchester in 1878." - Rev. Title A name given to the resource St. Mary (Lamont, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "Father Thomas J. Murtagh came from Masonville and Father Patrick S. O’Connor from Oelwein to celebrate mass for the Catholics of the area in the 1890s. They were of Czech, German, and Irish ancestry. In 1895 Father O’Connor brought together the Catholics of the Aurora, Lamont, and Dundee area to build a church. Lots were bought in Lamont, and the frame church was ready for use by the fall of 1896. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of her Immaculate Conception. Within a few years the Hazleton parish grew in numbers sufficient to support their own pastor, and Father M. M. Grady was appointed in November 1898 to reside in the Hazelton parish and also care for the Lamont area Catholics. He remained until the end of 1902." -Rev. Msgr. Title A name given to the resource St. Mary (Lycurgus, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "Landolm Haas, a veteran of the Mexican War, was the first settler in Saint Mary Parish, arriving in 1851 to take advantage of choice land at a low price. Father David Slattery was the first resident pastor and began the parish records. He came in December of 1875 and stayed until May of 1882. His successor, Father M. J. Gaffney, was the first of four pastors who stayed for short terms, until the advent of Father Michael K. Norton in December 1887. Father Norton stayed until September 1905. A parish hall was built and a wing added to the rectory, which was probably built for the first pastor in the 1870s. Hanley became pastor in 1887, he saw to the building of a three-story frame school and convent, which was known as Saint Xavier’s for many years. Cedar Rapids Sisters of Mercy staffed the school until 1940; then the Dubuque Franciscans. Accredited in the 1920s, the school was reduced to eight grades in 1950. The present church and rectory was finished in 1963 under Father Cooney’s direction. They were visited by Father William Edmonds of Iowa City and Father Clement Lowry of Cedar Rapids. Father William Walsh was appointed pastor in 1869, and he gathered the 25 Catholic families of the area for Mass in various homes for Sunday Mass.
