The school was established and in operation for three years before the first church was built. The German speaking parents in Saint Joseph Parish wanted their children to receive religious instruction in German so that they could assist in teaching their children. If we review the resident pastors of Saint Joseph’s, we realize it must have been English speaking from its beginning: Father Burke, Gosker, Leahy, and Reilly. In 1890 the German Catholics established a parochial school. The first teachers were laymen. In March 1892 land was purchased for the building of a church, which was completed the next summer. A few years later, Father Patrick Feeley became the pastor of the Charles City parish and directed the building of the first Roseville Church in 1870.  It was probably named Saint Mary’s at the time of its dedication. Title A name given to the resource St. Mary (Vining, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "Father John Zlebcik, a native of Bohemia and missionary to the Bohemian and German Catholics from Tama to Cedar Rapids, established many parishes while resident at Norway, Iowa. One of them is Saint Mary Parish at Vining in Tama County. In 1874, Adelbert Petranek donated a few acres of Land about two miles east of the present town of Vining for a Catholic cemetery and a place to build a church. Mr. Petranek and his neighbors soon built a church under the direction of Father John Zlebcik. Mass and the other sacraments were celebrated only every few months because of the large territory covered by Father Zlebik and his successors, Father Francis L. Title A name given to the resource St. Mary (Waterloo, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "The second parish in Waterloo Catholic history is Saint Mary’s, which began with the appointment of a pastor in 1898. “The German Catholic Saint Mary’s Building Association” was formed in 1894 to work toward a German parish. The German Catholics began building the first Saint Mary Church of the downtown location of the YWCA. When they asked Archbishop John J. Hennessy for a pastor, he appointed Father Henry J. Hemesath on January 18, 1898. Less than a week later Father Hemesath celebrated Mass in the basement of the church. When the church was completed, the basement was converted into a classroom. The following year three Franciscan Sisters arrived from Dubuque to take over teaching the 36 pupils. They were the first of over 200 Franciscans to serve the parish." - Kurt, Rev. Msgr. They built a stone church dedicated to Saint Rose, which was supplanted by a larger frame church in 1877. When lightning struck the church in 1881, another frame church was hastily built. It was declared unsafe in 1897 and there was serious thought of building in the town of Waucoma, which had prospered in the meantime. After many Sunday afternoon meetings, the parishioners sent J. J. Kieron to Archbishop Hennessy with the solution of building within the town of Waucoma. He readily gave permission and sent Father Martin Hogan to care for Saint Rose and build the church in Waucoma.” - Rev. Msgr. A few years later Bishop Mathias Loras bought a block of property from Frederick Cretzmeyer in 1855.
