One of them is Saint Mary Parish at Vining in Tama County. In 1874, Adelbert Petranek donated a few acres of Land about two miles east of the present town of Vining for a Catholic cemetery and a place to build a church. Title A name given to the resource St. Mary (Waterloo, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "The second parish in Waterloo Catholic history is Saint Mary’s, which began with the appointment of a pastor in 1898. “The German Catholic Saint Mary’s Building Association” was formed in 1894 to work toward a German parish. The German Catholics began building the first Saint Mary Church of the downtown location of the YWCA. When they asked Archbishop John J. Hennessy for a pastor, he appointed Father Henry J. Hemesath on January 18, 1898. Less than a week later Father Hemesath celebrated Mass in the basement of the church. When the church was completed, the basement was converted into a classroom. They built a stone church dedicated to Saint Rose, which was supplanted by a larger frame church in 1877. When lightning struck the church in 1881, another frame church was hastily built. It was declared unsafe in 1897 and there was serious thought of building in the town of Waucoma, which had prospered in the meantime. After many Sunday afternoon meetings, the parishioners sent J. J. Kieron to Archbishop Hennessy with the solution of building within the town of Waucoma. (2 documents) Description An account of the resource “Eight men organized Eagle Township in Black Hawk County in 1858. At least three of them are buried in the Eagle Center parish cemetery. A majority of the first settlers were Catholic. The first church was built on five acres of high ground, but never fully completed because of the economy. Train prices were depressed. After destruction in a windstorm in 1874, the church was replaced by a frame building that served the parish for over a century. Keane sent Father Daniel P. Mulcahy from Vinton to Cedar Rapids.  He had no church and only a few parishioners. In 1926 a combination brick church-school-rectory was completed and dedicated. The Sisters of Mercy staffed the school from the beginning and continue to be a part of the faculty to this day. During the ten years Father Behan was pastor the parish grew from a dozen families to 240. The school grew from 40 students in 1926 to 200 in 1939." -Kurt, Rev. Msgr.
