He had been ordained in Ireland in 1878 and appointed resident pastor of Placid (or Pleasant Grove) the following April. Soon after his arrival in Placid Father Commerford began celebrating Mass in the O’Connor home once a month. On November 9, 1879, the cornerstone of the first church was laid. Work on the church probably resumed the following spring, but there is no record of when it was completed or dedicated. That was probably when it was named for Saint Patrick."  - Rev. Msgr. Title A name given to the resource St. Patrick (Monti, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "At first, Saint Patrick’s at Monti was known as the Buffalo Grove parish, and sometimes as The Buffalo or Erin, but the community became known as Monti in 1882, when Charles O’Hagan opened a post office in his store and gave the town a new name. The Buffalo was a parish, a community, and a stream in the everyday language of southeastern Buchanan County. Sometimes the community was called Erin because the first settlers were Irish. They came in the early 1850s and 1860s and continued to be an Irish parish until the advent of the first German named family in 1900. Now they are almost equally of Irish and German ancestry. The first of these, Father John Sheils, pastor of Waverly, celebrated the first Mass in the area in the Downey home. Others were Fathers Thomas F. Gunn, Maurice Flavin, and Patrick J. Smith, successive pastors of Cedar Falls, and Father Peter O’Dowd of Ackley. Father Sheils began with a congregation of three families in 1861. By November 1877 there were enough families to begin building the first Saint Patrick Church under the guidance of Father Patrick Smith. Ryan lived in the Tom Magirl home while forming a parish and building a church. The church foundations are still visible in Calvary Cemetery on highway 13, about two miles south of Ryan. Completed about 1882, the church was named for Saint Michael, and the place was called Belmont. […]. Father Ryan encouraged other Irish to settle in the area, and a town began on the Steve McAleer farm. It was named for Father Ryan as he helped the Catholics north and west to form a new parish. Title A name given to the resource St. Patrick (St. Cecelia, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "The first church in western Howard County was Saint Patrick Church at Cecelia built in 1860 on a plot given by James Roche. Made of logs, it measured 16 by 21 feet and stood in the present cemetery. For some years before, Mass had been celebrated in homes of that area by missionary priests. When a priest arrived, the word was spread through the countryside by boys on horseback. The pioneers before 1860 were mostly French. Later the Irish came in good numbers. Although it was never a town, the place was early named Cecelia, perhaps for one of the first settlers. From 1875 to 1886 there was a post office named Cecelia.
