Title A name given to the resource St. Patrick (Parkersburg, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "For over fifteen years the first Catholics of Butler County in the Parkersburg area west of Cedar Falls were cared for by the missionary priests who ventured beyond parish territory. The first of these, Father John Sheils, pastor of Waverly, celebrated the first Mass in the area in the Downey home. Others were Fathers Thomas F. Gunn, Maurice Flavin, and Patrick J. Smith, successive pastors of Cedar Falls, and Father Peter O’Dowd of Ackley. Father Sheils began with a congregation of three families in 1861. By November 1877 there were enough families to begin building the first Saint Patrick Church under the guidance of Father Patrick Smith. Ryan lived in the Tom Magirl home while forming a parish and building a church. The church foundations are still visible in Calvary Cemetery on highway 13, about two miles south of Ryan. Title A name given to the resource St. Patrick (St. Cecelia, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "The first church in western Howard County was Saint Patrick Church at Cecelia built in 1860 on a plot given by James Roche. Made of logs, it measured 16 by 21 feet and stood in the present cemetery. For some years before, Mass had been celebrated in homes of that area by missionary priests. When a priest arrived, the word was spread through the countryside by boys on horseback. The pioneers before 1860 were mostly French. Later the Irish came in good numbers. Although it was never a town, the place was early named Cecelia, perhaps for one of the first settlers. From 1875 to 1886 there was a post office named Cecelia. He stopped there on a missionary journey and decided Tama was a better location for a church because of the larger community of Catholics and the railroad, which helped him serve the Belle Plaine and Blairstown Catholics. While he lived with James and Mary McDevitt in Waukon, he celebrated Mass in their home until 1864. During that year he purchased four lots and a house from the McDevitts and these were converted into a church. This building and its contents were destroyed by a fire on March 9, 1868, when Father Dennis Brennan was pastor. Keane asking permission to start a parish. There had been two parishes in the neighboring town of Norway. One of them began as a Czech parish, with the pastors serving the Czech Catholics in all directions. The other began as an Irish parish, which moved to Watkins when their church was destroyed by fire. By the time Father Meyer became their first resident pastor, most of the parish was German. (5 documents) Description An account of the resource “German Catholic settlers moved into western Dubuque County in the 1860s and some made their homes in the town of Worthington. Many went to Dyersville for Mass and the sacraments, and fewer went to Saint Martin’s in Cascade, where instructions were in English. They welcomed Father Anton Kortenkamp of Dyersville with his German background, and he readily organized the Worthington congregation and directed the building of a church. The cornerstone was dated November 1, 1868, and dedicated to Saint Paul. A parochial school opened in 1874, taught by laymen.” - Rev. Msgr.
