They are shaped with a rod at the center, and towards one end, it bulges out and rounds at the top. In the middle there are "fins" that help fly the mortar through the air and face towards the thinner rod. They are dirty or are losing their paint. The first two on the left have the larger end to the ground and the third has the more narrow end to the ground. Between the second and third mortars is some sort of a dark can where the title of the photograph is writing.
