St. Mary (Vining, Iowa)

Title

St. Mary (Vining, Iowa)

Description

"Father John Zlebcik, a native of Bohemia and missionary to the Bohemian and German Catholics from Tama to Cedar Rapids, established many parishes while resident at Norway, Iowa. One of them is Saint Mary Parish at Vining in Tama County. In 1874, Adelbert Petranek donated a few acres of Land about two miles east of the present town of Vining for a Catholic cemetery and a place to build a church. Mr. Petranek and his neighbors soon built a church under the direction of Father John Zlebcik. Mass and the other sacraments were celebrated only every few months because of the large territory covered by Father Zlebik and his successors, Father Francis L. Mikota and Father Francis Chmelar."
