An attorney, wearing wire-rimmed glasses and dressed in a suit and bow tie, is reading at a desk in his law office. Legal books and documents, an ink bottle and an eraser are on the top of the desk. A metal box filled with other documents, wrapped in brown or white paper, is on the left rear corner of the desk. Bookshelves, some with glass doors, can be seen at the rear of the room. Legal volumes are visible on the bookshelves. One set of shelves appears to be blocking a door. A small calendar with a stylized print of the silhouette of a Native American woman hangs from the door blocked by the bookshelves. A large, detailed map of the City of Dubuque is hanging on the right wall. A framed black and white photograph of cavalry troops is hanging from a wall-hung light fixture over the desk. Inserted in a corner of the photograph frame is a small print of a man in an army uniform standing in front of a large white tent. The number “52” has been written on the emulsion side of the negative and is visible in the upper right corner of the picture. The number “3” is written in the upper left corner.
