Sacred Heart (Green Island, Iowa)

"Green Island is a small Mississippi River town in the extreme southeastern corner of Jackson County and of the Archdiocese of Dubuque and named for the only patch of green showing during the high water. The town was first called Clarkestown or Clarkesville for its founder, James Clarke, who settled there in 1839. The streets were named for his wife and family. The junction of two rail lines brought some importance to the town. The pioneers attended mass in the homes of James Clarke, George Hay, and Frank Dittoe, and dinner was always served after Mass because of those who came from a distance. The visiting priests were from Bellevue and Lyons. The latter is now the northern part of Clinton."
