Creator

Loemker, Herman J., 1868-1937

Description

An engine, coal tender and one car may be seen a few feet from the entrance to the train tunnel in East Dubuque, Illinois. The numbers “1190” are visible on the side of the tender. The track curves slightly just before the tunnel entrance. A man is leaning out of the engine window, looking back at a rail road employee, who is dressed in a uniform and cap. This gentleman, with his hands clasped behind his back, is walking towards the engine. Steam is coming from dual engine smoke stacks. The tunnel entrance is arched, and constructed of native limestone. To the immediate left of the entrance is a small shed. A sign that reads “RAIL ROAD CROSSING LOOK OUT FOR …. CARS” has been erected near the shed. The number 1256 is written on a label that has been stuck to the lower left corner of the slide.
