Description

According to the photographer’s notes, this image was taken looking east along Eight Street, in Dubuque, Iowa. The street appears to be unpaved, or constructed of hard packed gravel. Sidewalks and a fire hydrant are visible. In the foreground, a lighted sign that reads “ Nazimova the Red Lantern” may be seen. The 1919 movie the Red Lantern, starred Russian-born actress Alla Nazimova. The sign serves as the marquee for the Grand Opera House, located at 261 Eight Street. A small brick building is visible across the street. A sign reading “Hotel,” is over the front door. The County courthouse with its large tower is visible behind the hotel. The number 1319 is written on a label that has been stuck to the lower left corner of the slide.
