Marking the Path
This political cartoon was published on June 27th, 1948, by the New York Times and shows a woman throwing letters or documents from a bag entitled “U.N. Truce”. She is leaving this as a trail for an angel in the background holding a “Permanent Peace” sign. The trail is in sand and runs through the word “Palestine” written across the sand. The woman says, “I hope she can follow while the trail is still clear”, highlighting the U.N.’s ignorance of the situation.
This political cartoon is meant to represent that the United Nations is doing Palestine no favors in assisting the situation. It represents that there was never a clear path to a truce between Palestine and the State of Israel. It’s also important to note that the word “Palestine” is written in sand, which is meant to represent that the United Nations believes Palestine is not meant to last and that it can, in a sense, be “washed away”. The angel in the background of the image holds a sign that reads “permanent peace.” This highlights that if the U.N. were to choose to use their advantages to help Palestine and the State of Israel make amends, permanent peace would indeed be possible.
